So things i learned NOT to do:
-No stolen work
-No eyes (though, may I say that if you don’t try to make them CREEPY LIKE WOWOWOWOW SPOOKY, then i think eyes might be okay?)
-No bloody mouths
-No mado recolors
-No huge looping maps with NOTHING in them
anything else?
-Eyes as a motif can work out, actually, just in small moderation, and perhaps the same eye(s) reoccurring over and over is fine. It really means “Don’t use eyes as a lazy way to scare people/be creepy”. Notice lazy. The same could go for bloody mouths.
-Try to base things around a central theme, or various themes. While complete and utter random worlds are ok, they’re better for games that aim to mimic dreams more than anything (ex Yume 2kki), or actual worlds not relating to dreams at all(ex.The Looking Glass). You can have various worlds that DON’T relate to any of your themes at all, but keep those in moderation.
-No internet memes, mainly due to how old and quickly forgotten they are (for example, remember Fred? Yeah I don’t either).
-Remember, any references to current events or outside media (like Homestuck, Twilight, Attack of the 50ft Gila Monster, etc.) will date your game, including internet memes. I only say this in case you want to apply it somewhere in game. :u
-It’s ok to have cliches, as long as they’re set up & written well.
-Foreshadowing is good, foreshadowing is great, just remember not to beat it on your audience like a giant metal slate. (yes to foreshadowing, but try to make it on the subtle side!)
-Always check your game for passability errors. Just, trust me ;w;
